Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Introduction

The Schlage Encode is a popular smart lock with convenient access control and security features. However, it can be frustrating if you are facing an issue with the Schlage Encode not connecting to Wi-Fi. This article will guide you through troubleshooting and fixing the Schlage Encode not relating to Wi-Fi issues using device, network, and lock-based troubleshooting.

Common Causes of Schlage Encode Not Connecting to Wi-Fi

Before we dive into the solutions, let us first understand the common causes of Schlage Encode not connecting to Wi-Fi issues. Here are some of the reasons why you may be facing this problem:

  1. Poor Wi-Fi Connectivity: Poor Wi-Fi connectivity is one of the most common reasons why your Schlage Encode may not connect to the Wi-Fi network. It may be caused by various factors such as distance from the router, interference from other devices, or network congestion. If your Schlage Encode is located too far from the router, or there are too many walls between the lock and the router, the Wi-Fi signal may be weak, causing connection issues.

  2. Incorrect Wi-Fi Credentials: Incorrect Wi-Fi credentials can cause the Schlage Encode not to connect to the Wi-Fi network. Ensure that you have entered the correct Wi-Fi credentials, including the Wi-Fi name and password.

  3. Device Compatibility Issues: The Schlage Encode may not be compatible with all devices. Check the device compatibility list on the manufacturer's website to ensure that your device is compatible with the smart lock.

  4. Outdated Firmware: An outdated firmware can cause connectivity issues. Check for firmware updates on the manufacturer's website and update your device's firmware if available. Firmware updates can help to resolve bugs and connectivity issues.

  5. Network Congestion: Network congestion can also cause connectivity issues. When there are too many devices connected to the network, it may cause network congestion, resulting in connection issues. Try reducing the number of devices connected to the network or switch to a less congested Wi-Fi channel.

  6. Interference from Other Devices: Other devices such as microwaves, cordless phones, or Bluetooth speakers, can cause interference and disrupt the Wi-Fi signal, resulting in connectivity issues. Ensure that your Schlage Encode is located away from other devices that can cause interference. Also, try to reduce the number of devices connected to the network that can cause interference.

Device Based Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble connecting your Schlage Encode to Wi-Fi, there are some device-based troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check the App for Updates: The first step is to check if there are any updates available for the Schlage Home App. Sometimes, updating the app can resolve the connectivity issue.

  2. Uninstall and Reinstall the Application: If the app is outdated or corrupted, uninstalling and reinstalling it can help resolve the issue. Ensure to back up any data before uninstalling the app.

  3. Check Your Mobile Device for Updates: Ensure that your mobile device's operating system is up to date. Operating system updates can fix bugs and connectivity issues, which may help resolve the Schlage Encode not connecting to Wi-Fi issue.

  4. Power Cycle Your Mobile Device: Power cycling your mobile device can help resolve temporary glitches that may cause connectivity issues. Turn off your device, wait for a few seconds, and turn it back on.

  5. Ensure the Mobile Device is Not Using a VPN: If you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), ensure that it is turned off. VPNs can interfere with the Wi-Fi connection, causing connectivity issues.

Network-Based Troubleshooting

If the device-based troubleshooting steps don't work, you can try network-based troubleshooting steps:

  • Ensure your network is set to 2.4GHz.

  • Ensure you have a WPA2 or better password protecting your network.

  • Ensure Ports 1883 (TCP/UDP) and Ports 8883 (TCP/UDP) is open.

  • Power cycle your network hardware.

  • Ensure no other devices on the network are having connectivity issues.

  • If other devices are impacted, please get in touch with your ISP to troubleshoot your network.

Lock Based Troubleshooting

If the above steps don't work, you can try lock-based troubleshooting:

  • You must be present and onsite to properly troubleshoot Wi-Fi issues using the Schlage Home App. Our Wi-Fi-based locks require a Bluetooth-connected device when connecting the lock to Wi-Fi.

  • Attempt a Soft reset.

  • Remove/disconnect the battery pack from the lock.

  • Quickly lock and unlock the unit 3x using the internal thumb turn.

  • Reconnect/reinsert the battery pack.

  • Quickly lock and unlock the unit 3x using the internal thumb turn.

  • Using the Schlage Home app, attempt to reconnect the lock to the Wi-Fi.

  • Factory reset the lock.

  • Go through the pairing process with the Schlage Home app.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Schlage Encode not connecting to Wi-Fi can be caused by various reasons, including poor Wi-Fi connectivity, incorrect Wi-Fi credentials, device compatibility issues, outdated firmware, network congestion, and interference from other devices.
